NSW Geographical Names Board NSW (GNB)

The GNB role in the road naming process is to set policy and process for all road naming proposals in NSW and to compile, maintain and publish road names as per s5.2 of the Geographical Names Act 1966. Under the provisions of Section 10 of the Roads Regulation, a road authority may not proceed with a proposal to name or rename a road against an objection made by the following persons or bodies except with the approval of the Minister’ of which the Surveyor General of NSW is a notifiable authority.

Local Government

Local Governments are recognised as address custodians for all address sites within their Local Government Area. Road names to all regional, local and private roads located within the Local Government area fall under the Roads Act 1993 and Roads Regulation 2018. All road naming proposals must be notified, supported and gazetted by the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB). Wollondilly Shire Councils operates under the Geographical Names Board NSW (GNB) Address Policy in its entirety including the NSW Addressing User Manual (AUM) & the NSW Retrospective Address Policy.
